South Korea Pushes Independent Defense Amid Nuclear Threat
(MENAFN) South Korea’s ruling Democratic Party calls Monday for greater reliance on the country’s own defense capabilities amid concerns that the United States and North Korea could pursue a new approach to Pyongyang’s nuclear program.
Party leader Kim Min-seok makes the appeal during a policy address to the National Assembly, warning that Seoul should prepare for possible changes in the security environment surrounding North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.
"The days when South Korea could depend solely on the United States are over," Kim said, adding that Washington is choosing to become "a tough negotiating partner rather than a generous big brother."
His comments come after several recent decisions by the US, including President Donald Trump’s move to reduce the scale of joint military exercises with South Korea.
Kim also stresses that Seoul should take a more active role in encouraging negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang, particularly as relations between the two countries could potentially improve.
"Considering the possibility that the United States and North Korea may achieve a dramatic improvement in relations and if by any chance, a 'freeze-first, resolve-later' approach could be adopted on the North Korean nuclear issue, South Korea must strengthen its independent security capabilities in advance," he said.
