Japan Issues Highest Landslide Warning for Niijima Amid Record Rainfall
(MENAFN) Japan issues its highest-level landslide warning for Niijima Island on Monday as the area faces exceptionally heavy rainfall, according to reports.
The Japan Meteorological Agency raises the alert to Level 5, the country’s highest emergency warning, after the island records 381 millimeters (15 inches) of rain within 24 hours through Monday.
Niijima, a volcanic island, lies roughly 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of Tokyo.
Meanwhile, intense rainfall affects wide parts of eastern Japan from early Monday. Authorities issue Level 4 landslide warnings for areas of Chiba and Saitama prefectures, parts of Tokyo, and central Fukushima prefecture.
Forecasters caution that additional heavy rain could hit broad areas along the Pacific coast as warm, moisture-filled air moves toward a rain front extending across Honshu, Japan’s main island.
Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to stay highly alert and take precautions against landslides and other weather-related hazards.
