North Korea Expands Naval Power with New Destroyer
(MENAFN) North Korea commissions its newly built Kang Kon destroyer as part of a broader effort to expand its naval capabilities and introduce vessels capable of supporting its nuclear forces, according to reports.
The commissioning ceremony takes place Sunday in the eastern port city of Wonsan, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attending alongside his wife, Ri Sol-ju, and their daughter, Ju-ae.
Kim describes the 5,000-ton warship as "essentially an offensive destroyer" and says it forms part of "the state nuclear counteraction system."
The vessel enters service just one day before a joint military exercise involving the US, Japan and South Korea begins. Pyongyang has repeatedly condemned such drills, referring to them as a “war rehearsal.”
"The new-generation destroyer should deal a deadly retaliatory blow at the enemies, as it is a force involved in the state nuclear counteraction system," Kim added.
Kim also emphasizes the importance of transforming North Korea’s navy into "a nuclear armed force," saying this would strengthen its ability to conduct maritime defense and deterrence operations "more clearly."
The Kang Kon is assigned to the North Korean navy’s East Sea Fleet, expanding the fleet’s deployment of large modern warships.
Its commissioning comes less than three months after North Korea places its first 5,000-ton destroyer, the Choe Hyon, into service with the West Sea Fleet.
