US, South Korea, Japan Deepen Military Cooperation Through Joint Drills
(MENAFN) US, South Korea and Japan launch a five-day military exercise Monday aimed at improving their ability to coordinate operations and respond jointly to security threats across several areas.
The Freedom Edge exercise takes place in international waters located east and south of South Korea’s southern island of Jeju, according to reports.
The multinational drills proceed as planned despite the US administration’s decision last month to shorten the separate Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise with South Korea, a move intended to encourage North Korea to resume dialogue.
"The three nations will leverage the drills to enhance operational capabilities and joint response capabilities across multiple domains, including maritime, air and cyber, while maintaining a robust and stable cooperative relationship," the JCS statement said.
The exercise brings together key naval and air forces from all three countries, while a joint command group supervises the activities to ensure coordinated and safe implementation of the operations.
According to the South Korean military, the training focuses on strengthening deterrence and improving the allies’ ability to respond to North Korea’s nuclear and missile capabilities, while also contributing to peace and stability across the region.
North Korea has repeatedly criticized joint military exercises involving the three countries, describing them as preparations for a potential conflict.
