“Misfortune Can Strike Without Warning”: Malaysians Urged To Register With MFA's E-Konsular, Though Not Mandatory

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 (NNN) -- Recent developments around the world, arising from natural disasters and geopolitical situations, have increased the need for Malaysians to register with the Foreign Affairs Ministry's e-Konsular system to provide information on their whereabouts.

For instance, when major floods occurred in Nepal last month, information on Malaysians there was obtained only from their relatives back home and travel agencies used by Malaysians travelling to the country.

The e-Konsular system helps Malaysian diplomatic missions around the world provide assistance more quickly in the event of an emergency.

Registration can be done at or by downloading the e-Konsular application via a QR code.

According to the gov website, the registration is intended to systematically record the whereabouts of Malaysians overseas.

Consular assistance for Malaysians abroad is one of the efforts by the Foreign Ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, to safeguard their welfare in all circumstances.

It covers cases involving the death, detention or disappearance of Malaysians abroad; deposits of money by family members for those requiring consular assistance; as well as other disasters and emergencies.

A survey of posts on the social media platform Threads found that many Malaysian users shared their experiences registering with e-Konsular while abroad.

Threads user icecoffeeonearth suggested that Malaysians email the Malaysian Embassy in the country they are visiting if the e-Konsular application cannot be accessed.

Another Threads user, solehahtravel, said that although registration is not mandatory, registering with e-Konsular would at least make it easier for Malaysians to deal with the relevant authorities.

“Misfortune can happen without warning...,” said the Threads user solehahtravel.
