Ukraine Drone Strike Kills One, Wounds Seventeen Near Nuclear Plant
(MENAFN) A Ukrainian drone strike killed one person and wounded 17 others, most of them employees at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, according to authorities on Tuesday.
The Zaporizhzhia facility, which was seized by Russian forces in March 2022 shortly after Moscow launched its full-scale war in Ukraine, is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. The site has remained a major source of safety concerns throughout the conflict.
Russian-installed officials managing the facility said Ukrainian forces carried out a "targeted strike" on a transport stop in Enerhodar. The incident killed a "nuclear specialist" and wounded 17 people, "most of them employees" of the plant.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said it had been informed that a drone exploded at "a bus stop used by staff" traveling to the nuclear facility at around 6 a.m. Tuesday.
IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi "solemnly calls on military commanders responsible... to put an immediate stop to these unacceptable actions," the UN nuclear watchdog said, warning that the incident creates "great risks to nuclear safety".
Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of carrying out attacks near the facility, which sits in Enerhodar along the Dnipro River, close to the frontline in southern Ukraine.
