Serbian Derby Features Controversial Tribute to Ratko Mladic
(MENAFN) The Serbian Super League clash between Crvena Zvezda and Partizan begins Sunday with a minute of silence honoring Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military commander convicted of war crimes.
Crvena Zvezda supporters display a large banner featuring Mladic, while fans from both sides chant his name before the match.
The tribute takes place ahead of the 180th “Eternal Derby” at Crvena Zvezda’s Rajko Mitic Stadium in Belgrade.
The minute-long tribute ends after the stadium announcer says “May eternal glory be his,” according to reports.
Crvena Zvezda later wins the match 2-1 against Partizan.
The incident occurs just two days after UEFA imposes a €90,000 ($104,523) fine on Crvena Zvezda over supporters’ chants and displays praising Mladic during the club’s Europa League playoff against Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic on Aug. 27.
UEFA also prohibits the club from selling tickets to its supporters for its next away fixture in a European competition. The disciplinary action includes allegations of racist or discriminatory conduct and the display of messages considered inappropriate for a sporting event.
