NATO Warships Dock in Algeria for Joint Naval Exercise
(MENAFN) Two NATO warships arrive Sunday at the port of Oran on Algeria’s northwestern coast to take part in a joint maritime exercise.
The Greek frigate HS Kountouriotis and Italian patrol ship ITS Montecuccoli are scheduled to remain in Algeria from Sunday through Wednesday.
The Algerian Navy plans to conduct a PASSEX exercise alongside the visiting vessels, with the drill designed to promote “the exchange of expertise and the strengthening of cooperation.”
PASSEX exercises primarily involve maritime surveillance and coordination. Algeria has previously held similar naval activities with NATO member states in the Mediterranean.
The commanders of the two ships and their accompanying delegations also visit the commander of the main naval base at Mers El Kebir. Discussions focus on “ways to advance military cooperation and strengthen bilateral relations.”
Mers El Kebir, situated along the coast of Oran, is Algeria’s largest naval base. It is part of the country’s western maritime zone, which encompasses coastal areas close to the border with Morocco.
