Trump Shares Image Altering New Mexico State Name to America
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has posted an image showing the word "Mexico" in the name of the US state of New Mexico crossed out and replaced with "America."
Trump offers no official explanation for the image, which he shares on his social media platform. It remains uncertain whether the post is intended as a rhetorical statement or signals any consideration within his administration of changing the state’s name.
The post comes after Trump has previously pursued changes to geographic names. On Jan. 20, 2025, he signed an executive order directing the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the Gulf of America, a decision that Mexico opposed. He later signed another order on Aug. 27 renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America" amid worsening trade tensions with Canada.
New Mexico becomes a US territory during the 19th century following the Mexican-American War. Under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, Mexico formally transfers the territory, along with California, to the United States.
Officials in New Mexico have not immediately commented on Trump’s post, while the White House has also not provided an immediate response.
