US Tightens Travel Restrictions in Mexican Border City
(MENAFN) The United States has imposed restrictions on official activities and travel to the Mexican border city of Nogales, limiting essential movement to daylight hours because of an unspecified security threat.
"We are alerting US citizens of this threat and change in posture," the US mission to Mexico said in a statement.
US authorities have not disclosed details about the reported threat. Americans in the area have been advised to remain particularly vigilant, monitor their surroundings, take shelter if an incident occurs and comply with directions issued by Mexican security authorities.
Nogales, in the northern state of Sonora, is a major border crossing between Mexico and the United States and has long faced challenges linked to organized crime, smuggling and sporadic violence. Sonora borders Arizona to the north and New Mexico to the northeast.
The US travel advisory currently places Sonora at Level 3, urging travelers to reconsider visiting the state because of security concerns.
