AfD Celebrates Historic Election Victory in Saxony-Anhalt

(MENAFN) Leaders of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) celebrate what they describe as a historic victory in Sunday’s Saxony-Anhalt state election, arguing that the strong result gives the party a clear mandate to seek control of the regional government.

"This is a historic result," AfD leader Alice Weidel told public broadcaster ZDF in an initial reaction.

"We're breaking records here; we'll break records throughout eastern Germany and at the federal level as well," she said, calling the result a “very clear mandate to govern.”

Weidel also criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) for maintaining its “firewall” against cooperation with the AfD. She warned that the CDU "will never again win an election" if it continues to reject collaboration with her party.

She characterized the election outcome as "a disastrous result" for the CDU.

AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla likewise celebrated the party’s performance, describing the result as “sensational.”

"Ulrich Siegmund will be the new minister-president of Saxony-Anhalt," he said.
