Witkoff Says US Sees Progress Toward Ukraine Peace
(MENAFN) The United States sees signs of movement toward a diplomatic settlement of the war in Ukraine and hopes to restart direct discussions involving Russia, Ukraine and the US, special envoy Steve Witkoff said Sunday.
Speaking in Kyiv alongside fellow US envoy Jared Kushner and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Witkoff said the American delegation had taken proposals discussed during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to Kyiv for consideration.
“We think we made a lot of progress in Moscow. We heard new ideas,” he said.
Witkoff said Washington is considering a new round of trilateral negotiations involving all three countries, stressing that cooperation among the parties is essential. He added that details of such a meeting could be announced soon.
“It’s going to take both sides to make some compromises and narrow the issues between them. We think we have the ingredients to get to that place,” he said.
He explained that his and Kushner’s primary objective is to bring the sides closer together, reduce disagreements and create effective channels for communication.
Witkoff said their work during the previous 48 hours had started “constructively.”
“We’re committed, we care, and we hope all of that leads to a successful, peaceful, diplomatic resolution,” he said.
