Firefighters Battle Major Wildfire Near Konitsa in Greece

(MENAFN) More than 150 firefighters are working to contain a major wildfire near the northwestern Greek town of Konitsa, as authorities warn residents about thick smoke spreading across the area.

The fire began on Aug. 31 in the mountainous Trapezitsa area of Epirus and has grown more intense after several flare-ups in recent days, according to reports.

Firefighting efforts involve more than 150 personnel, eight specialized ground teams and 48 vehicles. Aerial support is also being provided by eight aircraft and four helicopters.

Konitsa’s Civil Protection service warned that increased use of aircraft and helicopters could further worsen the heavy smoke affecting the town.

Residents with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions have been advised to stay indoors in sealed, air-conditioned areas or leave the affected zone before conditions become more difficult.

Authorities have also urged people to stay away from roads leading toward the wildfire and ensure narrow routes remain accessible to emergency crews.

The difficult firefighting conditions are being worsened by steep terrain, limited access and dense vegetation, making it harder for crews to reach certain parts of the blaze.

Firefighters are concentrating on containing the flames and preventing them from moving downhill toward Konitsa or spreading across the river into the Tymfi mountain area, which forms part of the broader Pindus range.
