European Commission Considers Danube Corridor An Alternative Route For Ukrainian Agricultural Exports

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) A European Commission spokesperson said this in a comment to Ukrinform.

“TheEU is fully committed to continuing to support Ukraine's access to international markets,” the spokesperson said.

The European Commission is“closely monitoring” the situation in the Black Sea, including“disruptions caused by Russian attacks on Ukraine's seaports, transport infrastructure, and border-crossing points.”

The European Commission is also assessing the potential consequences for agriculture, the economy as a whole, and global food security.

“We support initiatives for a moratorium on attacks in the Black Sea,” the spokesperson emphasized, following a similar statement last week by European Commission Vice-President and EU chief diplomat Kaja Kallas.

“In response to the deteriorating situation in the Black Sea and growing problems for shipping, particularly in the Danube region, the European Commission is maintaining contact with the Ukrainian authorities and Ukraine's neighboring countries to address current challenges. It is also using the Solidarity Lanes mechanisms to adapt capacity to growing demand for transport and support Ukraine's access to international markets,” the spokesperson said.

According to him, the Danube corridor remains“the most promising alternative in terms of potential capacity.”

As previously reported by Ukrinform, President Volodymyr Zelensky, on September 4, discussed food security with partners from North Africa and the Middle East and thanked them for their attention to food-related issues amid Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports. He emphasized the need to ensure the safety of maritime food shipments, as this is a matter of social security for dozens of countries around the world.

The president said that Ukraine was working with parties capable of influencing the situation and proposing practical diplomatic solutions to prevent a food crisis, a cost-of-living crisis, and social upheaval, adding that relevant decisions were being prepared to this end.

As reported, Russia is conducting a targeted campaign against Ukrainian grain exports and seeking to block maritime trade routes in the Black Sea, posing threats to global food security.
