Iran Claims Drone Strike Destroys US Surveillance System in Iraq
(MENAFN) Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it has destroyed a US military tethered surveillance aerostat in a drone attack near Erbil airport in northern Iraq.
According to the IRGC, drones operated by its Aerospace Force struck the US military’s Persistent Surveillance Systems-Tethered (PSS-T) aerostat during clashes between Iran and the US in the region on Wednesday. The group said the surveillance system was “completely destroyed.”
The IRGC also released video footage that it said captured the moment the system was struck.
The Iranian force explained that the PSS-T is different from traditional balloons because it is secured to the ground and remains positioned at a fixed site, allowing it to function “like a surveillance tower.”
The United States has not immediately responded to the Iranian military’s claim.
Tensions across the region have intensified since US and Israeli attacks on Iran began on Feb. 28. Tehran has responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel as well as US-linked interests in several locations across the region.
In June, Iran and the US reached a memorandum of understanding with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar. The agreement outlines measures aimed at stopping hostilities, restoring navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and addressing economic restrictions.
