Kushner Says Trump Seeks Lasting Peace in Ukraine

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump is aiming for more than simply bringing the war in Ukraine to an end, seeking instead to establish the foundations for a stable and lasting peace, White House envoy Jared Kushner said Sunday.

Kushner made the remarks during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, alongside US special envoy Steven Witkoff. He said any future settlement should help prevent another conflict while giving Ukraine the opportunity to recover, rebuild and pursue long-term development.

"President Trump ... wanted us to convey that peace is a very, very hard and complex problem, but it's a very worthy problem worth solving. Not just to figure out how we end the current war, but how do we create the right conditions and arrangements for a long-term, durable peace," he said.

Witkoff characterized the discussions as “very substantive,” expressing confidence in continuing the diplomatic efforts.

“We are encouraged and ready to continue working for as long as it takes,” he said.

Zelenskyy, meanwhile, emphasized that Ukraine considers Trump’s direct involvement in the negotiations important. He also stressed that Kyiv wants any eventual settlement to be "just."

The discussions between the US and Ukrainian delegations are taking place in two stages. The initial session is held in a limited format, while the second brings in national security advisers from Britain, France and Germany, according to the Ukrainian side.
