US Energy Chief Warns Iran Nuclear Deal May Not Materialize
(MENAFN) A nuclear agreement between the United States and Iran may fail to come about, leaving Washington to consider military action aimed at eliminating Tehran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Sunday.
"There may not be a nuclear agreement," Wright told a media outlet. "It may be simply destroying their capabilities to do it. An agreement may await a next administration in Iran. We simply don't know that."
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that Iran’s leadership has undergone a fundamental transformation since US and Israeli strikes began in late February. Despite the attacks and a change in the country’s supreme leadership, however, Iran’s political system remains in place.
Asked if continued military strikes could remain the approach for preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, Wright said that eliminating its capabilities would be necessary. "You have to destroy their capabilities to do it," he said. "They built a massive missile infrastructure to manufacture missiles, which you see them firing today, but they don't have the capability to build more missiles."
Wright also discussed the movement of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important routes for energy shipments. He said the current seven-day average of oil transported through the strategic waterway exceeds 9 million barrels per day, describing it as the highest seven-day average ever recorded. He made a similar assessment earlier in August.
