Armed Man Charges Towards Democratic Ohio Governor Candidate
WASHINGTON, Sept 7 (NNN-dpa) -- An armed man attempted to attack Democratic Ohio governor candidate Amy Acton at a community festival in Canfield, United States (US), but she escaped unharmed while at least two people were injured, her campaign team said on Sunday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
Security officers overpowered and arrested the man after he pushed through the crowd towards Acton, injuring at least two elderly people in the incident.
US media reported that the 38-year-old suspect was carrying two pistols but did not draw them.
His motive was not immediately known, and it was unclear whether he legally owned the weapons or was permitted to carry them.
Acton's campaign team thanked security officers and wished those injured a speedy recovery, saying there was no place for politically motivated violence in Ohio.
Her Republican rival, Vivek Ramaswamy, called the incident“completely unacceptable,” as did outgoing Republican Governor Mike DeWine. DeWine is not seeking re-election.
The gubernatorial election will take place alongside the US congressional midterm elections on November 3.
Ramaswamy, a wealthy entrepreneur who unsuccessfully sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, later backed Donald Trump and is campaigning on his close relationship with the US president.
Acton is a doctor who previously served as Ohio's health department director under DeWine.
Ohio is traditionally Republican, but the governor's race is considered competitive, with local polls pointing to a close result.
