Southern France Swelters as Heat Wave Sets September Record
(MENAFN) A punishing heat wave continued to bake southern France on Monday, with six departments placed under an orange heat wave warning as temperatures were forecast to climb to 39C (102.2F), according to Meteo-France, cited by a broadcaster.
The departments of Aude, Herault, Gard, Vaucluse, Drome and Ardeche stayed under the orange alert Monday morning as temperatures held above 20C across much of the country's southern half.
Nice hit 26C, while Montpellier logged 23C and both Nimes and Montelimar reached 21C, the national weather service reported.
Forecasters expected daytime highs to climb between 35C and 38C across the southeast, with some spots pushing as high as 39C.
Meteo-France said the heat would ease slightly Tuesday before dropping sharply Wednesday as rain and thunderstorms sweep through the region.
The orange heat wave alert is set to be lifted across all affected departments Tuesday morning.
Sunday brought record-breaking September heat to several locations. Albi in the Tarn department hit 39.2C, Auch in Gers reached 38.4C, Toulouse-Blagnac climbed to 37.9C, Marseille-Marignane touched 36.8C and Aurillac reached 34C.
In Durban-Corbieres, located in the Aude department, temperatures soared to 40.8C — a new national record for the month of September.
This latest bout of extreme heat adds to a string of intense heat events that have struck France this year. One spell in late June reached record-breaking intensity, while another, stretching from late July into August, lasted 23 days and tied France's longest heat wave on record, set in 1983.
