Avalanche Kills 11 Climbers in Russia's Kabardino-Balkaria

(MENAFN) An avalanche in Russia's Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria has claimed 11 lives and left six others injured, the regional Emergency Situations Ministry reported Monday.

The avalanche struck a party of 33 climbers in Bezengi Gorge on Saturday, according to the ministry. While ten climbers were able to make their way down unassisted, the whereabouts of six others remain unconfirmed.

Officials said 56 rescue personnel have been dispatched to the site.

"Search and rescue operations are being complicated by difficult terrain and the risk of additional avalanches," authorities said, adding that an Mi-8 helicopter and a commercial helicopter are expected to join the search when weather conditions improve.
