Greek, Italian Warships Dock in Oran for NATO-Algeria Exercise
(MENAFN) Two NATO warships docked Sunday at the port of Oran on Algeria's northwest coast to take part in a joint naval drill, the Algerian Defense Ministry announced.
The Greek frigate HS Kountouriotis and the Italian patrol ship ITS Montecuccoli are on a visit running from Sunday through Wednesday, the ministry said in a statement.
During the visit, the Algerian Navy will carry out a PASSEX drill alongside the two vessels to facilitate "the exchange of expertise and the strengthening of cooperation," the ministry added. PASSEX exercises are centered on maritime surveillance, and Algeria has conducted similar joint drills with NATO member states in the Mediterranean in the past.
The statement noted that the ships' commanders, along with their accompanying delegations, paid a courtesy visit to the commander of the main naval base at Mers El Kebir, where discussions focused on "ways to advance military cooperation and strengthen bilateral relations."
Mers El Kebir, Algeria's largest naval base, sits on the coast of Oran and forms part of the country's western maritime zone — a region that covers coastal areas near the border with Morocco.
