Amazon Cargo Plane Overshoots Miami Runway, Kills 5
(MENAFN) At least five people were killed and five others injured Sunday after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport in Florida, a local official confirmed.
"Earlier today, we know that the 21 Air Flight 7598 overran the runway, and now we know that five people lost their lives and five others were injured," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.
"My heart is with all of the families who were affected," she added.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Ray Jadallah said 10 people in total were involved in the incident, with three of the injured in critical condition and rushed to a trauma center, while two others were transported to a local hospital.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft overran the runway after landing around 2 pm local time (1800GMT). The plane, which had departed from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, struck multiple vehicles and caught fire, prompting a massive response of more than 60 fire rescue units.
The FAA issued a ground stop for inbound flights to Miami International Airport, citing a disabled aircraft along with runway and taxiway constraints. Airport officials said the plane came to rest disabled at the northwest end of the diagonal runway, forcing the closure of all runways and taxiways.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said first responders were actively assessing the scene and warned travelers to brace for significant delays and possible cancellations.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office shut down a section of Northwest 67th Avenue near the airport due to the heavy presence of emergency responders.
The FAA said it would launch an investigation into the incident, while the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it was in the process of gathering information about the crash.
An Amazon spokesperson told local media that the aircraft experienced an incident while attempting to land, adding that the company was working closely with local authorities to "understand exactly what happened."
Operator 21 Air did not immediately respond to Anadolu's request for comment.
