Canada Pledges New Sanctions, Allied Pressure on Iran
(MENAFN) Canada announced Sunday it will work in lockstep with international partners to ratchet up sanctions and sustain pressure on Iran, escalating its stance against Tehran.
Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand and Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne issued a joint statement condemning Iran and demanding it immediately halt its "destabilizing activities in the Middle East." The two officials singled out Iran's "continued threats to vessels seeking to transit the Strait of Hormuz," its "pursuit of illicit nuclear activities" and its "support for regional proxy groups."
According to the statement, Ottawa is coordinating closely with G7 partners to back US-led efforts — alongside France and the UK — aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz to safe passage.
The statement also reaffirmed Canada's backing for Operation Economic Outcast, a US-led maximum-pressure sanctions campaign, as well as any parallel initiatives designed to choke off Iran's ability to "finance terrorist activities."
Since 2010, Canada has sanctioned 492 Iranian individuals and entities under SEMA, the Special Economic Measures Act, along with the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act — underscoring the scale of Ottawa's long-running campaign against Tehran.
Looking ahead, the ministers said Canada will continue pursuing "additional measures" in concert with global allies to compel Iran to abandon its "malign behavior."
Iran did not immediately respond to Canada's accusations.
