Japan Issues Highest Landslide Alert as Record Rain Batters Niijima
(MENAFN) Japan's meteorological agency issued its top-level landslide warning Monday for Niijima Island as torrential rain pounded the region, state media reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) declared the Level 5 Emergency Warning after a record 381 millimeters (15 inches) of rain fell on the island over the 24 hours through Monday, a state broadcaster reported.
Niijima, a volcanic island, sits roughly 160 kilometers (100 miles) south of Tokyo.
Heavy rain also swept across eastern Japan starting in the early hours of Monday, prompting the JMA to issue a Level 4 landslide alert for parts of Chiba and Saitama prefectures, as well as Tokyo and the central part of Fukushima prefecture.
Weather officials cautioned that further rainfall is expected across broad areas facing the Pacific coast, as warm, moisture-laden air moves toward a rain front stretched along Honshu, Japan's main island.
They urged residents in the affected regions to stay on high alert for landslides and other weather-related disasters.
