UN Envoy Urges 'Inclusive' Sudan Peace Push After Burhan Talks
(MENAFN) The United Nations' top envoy to Sudan pressed Sunday for momentum behind an "inclusive and strategic" political track to end the nearly three-year war gripping the country.
Pekka Haavisto raised the call during a meeting in Khartoum with Sudan's Army Chief and Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the council said in a statement.
The two officials reviewed the state of the conflict, discussed measures to shore up security and stability, and weighed the outlook for a lasting peace settlement, according to the statement.
"I conveyed important messages related to de-escalation and the protection of civilians," Haavisto was quoted as saying.
The envoy also voiced optimism that sustained negotiations could eventually produce a prisoner and detainee exchange between Sudan's military and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
"Dialogue is the path to sustainable peace," Haavisto said, pledging that the UN would coordinate with Sudanese stakeholders and its partners in a five-member international mechanism to drive forward a political process rooted in the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
That mechanism brings together the UN, the African Union, the European Union, the Arab League and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Haavisto touched down in Sudan on Friday to hold discussions with relevant parties on de-escalation and civilian protection; no timeline has been given for how long his visit will last.
The diplomatic push comes days after Sudan's Dialogue Preparatory Committee launched, on Aug. 30, an independent initiative meant to facilitate broader consultations and help build a path toward ending the war and forging national consensus.
Sudan has been engulfed in fighting between the army and the RSF since April 2023, a conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people and driven roughly 13 million from their homes, according to UN and international estimates.
