Iran Threatens South Korea Over Military Involvement in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Iran warned South Korea on Monday that any military involvement by Seoul in the Persian Gulf or Strait of Hormuz would carry “serious consequences,” amid reports that the Asian country is considering contributing forces to efforts aimed at maintaining safe navigation through the strategic waterway.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said relations between Tehran and Seoul have lasted for more than 64 years and have generally developed around mutual respect.
“Iran attaches great importance to its friendly relations with South Korea,” Baqaei said.
He nevertheless warned that any military deployment or participation by another country in operations in the Persian Gulf or Strait of Hormuz would be viewed by Tehran as direct support for the aggressor.
Baqaei said this would come at a time when Iran is defending itself against what he described as US aggression and responding to US “war crimes against women and children.” He added that such involvement “would inevitably be regarded as direct support for the aggressor and would have serious consequences.”
“No sovereign and responsible country should succumb to US pressure and intimidation and become complicit in acts of aggression and horrific crimes against the great Iranian nation,” he added.
