Two Egyptian Pilgrims Killed in Bus Crash Near Mecca
(MENAFN) A bus crash near the Saudi city of Al-Jumum has left two Egyptian pilgrims dead and 25 injured, Egypt's Foreign Ministry announced Sunday, as the group was traveling from Medina to Mecca to perform Umrah.
The ministry said 47 Egyptian pilgrims were aboard the bus when it crashed Saturday evening.
Among the 25 injured, all suffered light to moderate wounds, the ministry's statement noted, with seven requiring intensive care.
The rest of the injured pilgrims were treated and discharged from hospitals, then transported to their designated hotels in Mecca.
As of Sunday, Saudi officials had not offered public comment on the incident.
Umrah, unlike the mandatory Hajj, is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca centered on visiting the Kaaba and performing a set of sacred devotional and purification rites.
