Yemeni Army Retakes Ground From Houthis in Fierce Clashes
(MENAFN) The Yemeni army said Sunday it had recaptured positions in the Taiz and Al-Hudaydah governorates during fighting with the Houthis that left more than 20 members of the group dead or wounded.
The Yemeni Armed Forces Media Center said government troops carried out large-scale operations across several fronts, retaking lost ground, securing new positions and beating back infiltration attempts.
According to the statement, the army launched a three-pronged assault on the Al-Barh front earlier Sunday, reclaimed positions in Al-Kadha west of Taiz, and established new footholds south of Al-Hudaydah. Forces later repelled a Houthi infiltration attempt on the Al-Dhabab front west of Taiz.
The clashes also inflicted significant damage on the Houthis' military equipment, the army said.
Separately, Yemeni warplanes struck Houthi positions in Al-Barh, southern Al-Hudaydah, and the western outskirts of Marib province. Additional airstrikes hit Houthi positions and gatherings in Al-Labanat, Al-Alam, and Al-Jawf governorate, with the army claiming heavy losses in both personnel and equipment.
Yemen had been experiencing a relative lull in fighting since April 2022, following nearly 12 years of war between government forces — backed by a Saudi-led coalition — and the Iran-aligned Houthis, who seized the capital Sanaa and large swaths of the country in 2014.
Since late 2023, following the outbreak of war in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis have grown increasingly entangled in regional hostilities, striking Israel and targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The recent surge in fighting has stoked fears that Yemen could slide back into full-scale conflict.
