Insecurity Forces Thousands to Flee Homes in Sudan’s Blue Nile—IOM
(MENAFN) Nearly 1,700 people are forced to leave their homes in Sudan’s southeastern Blue Nile state as security conditions deteriorate, according to the International Organization for Migration.
Field teams estimate that 1,690 people from the villages of Abigo, Balang and Gambarda in Al-Kurmuk locality are displaced on Sept. 5. The affected families seek safety in Baw locality, also within Blue Nile state.
“The situation remains tense and volatile,” the IOM said.
The latest displacement comes days after the agency reported that around 3,000 people, or about 500 families, had fled three villages in Al-Kurmuk on Aug. 31 as insecurity intensified.
Violence has escalated across Blue Nile in recent days following attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and their ally, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, against several locations in the state.
On Friday, authorities in Al-Kurmuk said Sudanese army forces had successfully repelled an attack by the RSF and SPLM-N in the Al-Baraka area.
