Israeli Settler Sparks Outrage, Spitting at Entrance St. James Monastery
(MENAFN) An Israeli settler spits at the entrance of the Monastery of St. James in the Armenian Quarter of occupied East Jerusalem’s Old City, according to Palestinian authorities.
The Jerusalem Governorate says the incident is part of a continuing pattern of attacks against churches, monasteries and Christian clergy in the Old City. These incidents reportedly include spitting, verbal abuse, physical assaults and acts of vandalism.
The governorate also releases footage appearing to show the Israeli settler spitting at the monastery’s entrance.
The incident occurs a day after Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin meets with a delegation from Churches for Middle East Peace to discuss attacks against Christians by Israeli settlers.
During the meeting, Shahin briefs the delegation on the “deteriorating situation in the West Bank and escalating violence by Israeli occupiers under the protection of the Israeli army,” according to a statement from her office.
She also draws attention to the difficulties facing Palestine’s Christian community, including a significant decline in its population as Palestinians continue to face challenging conditions.
Members of the delegation say their visit is intended to show solidarity with Palestinians. They also express concern over the difficulties confronting Christians and the continued decline of their numbers in the Holy Land and throughout Palestine.
