Kremlin Says Anchorage Understandings Remain on Agenda
(MENAFN) The Kremlin says parts of the understandings reached during the Anchorage summit will continue to feature in discussions, despite uncertainty over their current relevance to the United States and Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov says the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, last year produced “certain understandings.” However, he says it remains unclear how applicable those arrangements are from the perspectives of Washington and Kyiv.
“But at least some elements of those understandings will always remain on the agenda,” he said.
Peskov also describes the recent meeting involving Putin, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, as evidence of an “atmosphere of trust” between the participants.
“The very fact that the meeting is taking place means that an atmosphere of trust does exist, at least through this channel of communication, and is strengthening,” Peskov said. “Usually, extended exchanges of such welcoming remarks appear when there are messages that the head of state considers necessary to send.”
Kushner and Witkoff travel to Moscow on Saturday for talks with Putin. The discussions last three hours and 10 minutes and focus on the war in Ukraine as well as the possibility of pursuing major projects between Russia and the US.
The meeting is described as “substantive, constructive and extremely frank.”
