US Forces Reroute Vessels as Iran Blockade Continues
(MENAFN) US forces have redirected 92 commercial vessels as part of efforts to enforce a maritime blockade against Iran, according to the US military’s Central Command.
"As of Sept. 6, US forces have redirected 92 commercial vessels, disabled 3 and boarded 2 to ensure strict compliance," Central Command said on US social media company X.
The command also reports that a US Air Force F-35A stealth fighter is conducting patrols over regional waters as maritime tensions remain high.
The announcement comes amid an ongoing conflict that began after the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran in February. Tehran responded with attacks targeting US positions in several parts of the region.
In June, Iran and the US signed a memorandum of understanding through mediation by Pakistan and Qatar. The agreement outlines measures intended to halt hostilities, restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and address economic restrictions.
Since then, both sides have accused each other of failing to fulfill their commitments under the agreement. At the same time, military tensions remain elevated, with disagreements continuing over sanctions and maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
