Wedding Venue Fire Kills Dozens in Kinshasa
(MENAFN) At least 22 people die and several others sustain injuries after a fire breaks out at a wedding reception venue in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, on Saturday.
The blaze erupts inside a building in the Lingwala commune while a wedding celebration is underway, according to local officials.
After visiting the scene, Lingwala Mayor Norbert Mushinga confirms that the preliminary death toll reaches 22.
"After inspecting the place, I can confirm that the provisional death toll stands at 22," Mushinga told reporters in Kinshasa.
He says confusion and panic make it difficult for people to escape the building, particularly through the emergency exit.
"People faced difficulties reaching the emergency exit; everyone was in a state of panic," he said.
The fire also causes significant damage to property inside the building, while several injured victims are transported to medical facilities in Kinshasa for treatment.
Authorities launch an investigation to determine what caused the blaze, with an electrical malfunction considered a possible cause.
Following the incident, Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani instructs provincial governors to immediately inspect venues used for public gatherings across the country.
He also orders officials to shut down establishments that fail to comply with required safety regulations.
