Zelenskyy Holds Peace Talks with US Envoys in Kyiv
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy meets with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Kyiv on Sunday as diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war continue.
“Negotiations have begun,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.
Zelenskyy says Russia prevented the US delegation from reaching Ukraine by air, despite Ukrainian authorities having prepared the country’s airports to receive the officials.
"Unfortunately, the Russians have shown through their strikes that they cannot allow us to use our airports, even though we have prepared everything and our airports are still operating today," he said.
Witkoff and Kushner, who is the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, arrive at a railway station in the Ukrainian capital earlier in the day. The visit marks their first trip to Ukraine since Russia’s war against the country began.
The US envoys travel to Kyiv after holding discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The meeting lasts three hours and 10 minutes and covers the ongoing conflict as well as the possibility of major cooperation projects between Russia and the United States.
The Moscow talks are described as “substantive, constructive and extremely frank.”
Russia and Ukraine last engaged in direct peace discussions earlier this year through US mediation, with three rounds of negotiations taking place in January and February.
Those talks have since been suspended, with both Moscow and Kyiv linking the pause to the US war on Iran, which began in late February.
