US Envoys Visit Kyiv to Advance Ukraine Peace Efforts
(MENAFN) US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, arrive in Kyiv on Sunday as part of diplomatic efforts to help bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
The two US representatives are expected to hold discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during their visit, according to reports.
Their trip to Kyiv follows a visit to Moscow on Saturday, where they met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It marks their first official visit to the Ukrainian capital as part of the current peace initiative.
The meeting in Moscow lasts three hours and 10 minutes and focuses on the war in Ukraine as well as the possibility of pursuing major economic and strategic projects between Russia and the US.
The discussions are described as “substantive, constructive and extremely frank.”
Putin reiterates that Russia remains prepared to work with Washington toward finding a political and diplomatic settlement to the conflict. He also emphasizes the importance of addressing what Moscow calls the “root causes” of the war.
According to reports, Putin discusses Russia’s recent battlefield gains and expresses confidence that his country will ultimately accomplish its stated objectives.
Trump says Friday that Kushner and Witkoff are traveling to Moscow not to present new ideas, but to deliver a proposal intended to help end the war, which has continued for more than four years.
