Dr. Syrus Islam is an Associate Professor of Accounting at the Auckland University of Technology and has previously served as Interim Head of Department of Accounting. Syrus is a dedicated teacher and has taught courses for Bachelor Degree (BBus), Research Master Degree (MBus), Master in Business Administration (MBA), and Master in Professional Accounting (MPA). He loves to help students use accounting and business knowledge to make better decisions in today's fast-changing world. He has experience in developing innovative curriculum and teaching approaches.

Syrus is a passionate researcher, has cross-disciplinary expertise, and focuses on undertaking impactful research. He is advancing a new research stream examining accounting and business topics in Impact Investing, Social Enterprise, Blended Finance, and UN SDGs. He currently serves as the Leader of the AUT Accounting For Social Impact Research Group. His research is practice-focused, which has attracted several awards from the likes of Emerald Publishing and the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ). His research has been published in a variety of leading international journals, including Journal of Management Accounting Research, Accounting and Finance, Australian Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing Insights, Organizational Dynamics, and Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management. Syrus also serves as a reviewer for several reputed journals such as Management Accounting Research, Journal of Management Studies, Accounting and Finance, Australian Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing Insights, Qualitative Research in Accounting & Management, Business & Society, Meditary Accountancy Research, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Journal of Social Entrepreneurship, and Social Enterprise Journal.

Syrus plays a leadership role in the global impact investing industry. From 2020 to 2023, he served on the Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS+) Working Group of the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) in New York, USA, which developed generally accepted metrics and implementation guidelines underlying IRIS+, which is used by more than 400 leading impact investing firms across over 55 countries. He has also advised impact investing practitioners from diverse markets, including Australia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Syrus organizes the Accounting for Social Impact Case Competition for University Students - an annual global competition that promotes students' understanding of using accounting and business knowledge to address real-world problems. From 2017 to 2022, he served as a mentor and judge of the Young Enterprise Scheme run by the Auckland Business Chamber to equip young people to navigate their social entrepreneurial journey. Syrus has also served on the AUT Business School's Postgraduate Research Programmes Assessment Board, Teaching & Learning Committee, and Research Committee. In addition, he has served in important committee roles for the American Accounting Association and the Accounting & Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand.
