Terror Figures In J&K Moving Towards Zero: Shah

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said separatism has reduced considerably in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370, while asserting that terrorism in the Union Territory is“gradually shrinking and moving towards zero”.

Shah made the remarks while addressing reporters after chairing a high-level meeting on narcotics in Goa, where he also said the Narendra Modi government would eliminate the drug menace in the country in the same manner as it had tackled Naxalism.

“After the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, the feeling of separatism has reduced considerably. The figures of terrorism are gradually shrinking and moving towards zero. Jammu and Kashmir has progressed on the path of development,” the Home Minister said.

He said successful efforts had also been made to bridge the“mental distance” that existed between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country.

Shah was responding in the broader context of the Centre's internal security record since 2019, when he said the government had undertaken measures to address terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Left Wing Extremism and unrest caused by armed groups in the Northeast.

The Home Minister said the five-decade-old problem of Naxalism had“almost become a thing of the past”, claiming that most people who had imagined the“Red Corridor” had surrendered and joined the mainstream.

“The way Naxalism was eliminated from the country, the Union government will similarly eliminate the menace of drugs,” Shah said.

He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government with bringing about significant changes in the country's internal security situation since 2019.

Shah also highlighted developments in the Northeast, saying around 11,000 youth had laid down arms in the region. The Centre, he said, had signed more than 14 agreements with armed groups, following which the Northeast was also progressing on the path of development.

On fugitives who fled the country after allegedly committing crimes, Shah said the government had launched a campaign against them after 2019.

“From 2019 to July 2026, a total of 274 fugitives have been extradited from 36 countries,” he said, adding that those extradited included people accused in serious cases involving economic offences, terrorism, narcotics and gang wars.

The meeting in Goa was attended by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and senior officials of the Union Home Ministry and the state government.
