NATO Vows Firm Response to Hybrid Attacks on Allies

(MENAFN) NATO allies must take deliberate hybrid warfare threats seriously and respond decisively, while the United States will support members targeted by such actions, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker says Saturday.

Speaking during a business conference in Italy, Whitaker says a recent drone-related incident at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport, which Berlin attributed to Russia, raises greater concern than cases in which Russian drones entered NATO airspace while carrying out attacks against Ukraine.

"Then you have what I would call the more concerning hybrid actions like we saw in Leipzig, like we have seen in Poland," Whitaker says, according to reports.

He calls on NATO countries to maintain heightened vigilance and take firm action whenever hostile activity is traced to a responsible party.

"If we can identify who's doing it – which Germany did – we make sure we express strongly that is unacceptable and we will not tolerate it," he says.

Whitaker also cautions that vital infrastructure, including energy installations, could become targets and urges governments to closely monitor and protect such facilities.

Although individual countries remain primarily responsible for responding to hybrid incidents within their territories, Whitaker stresses that Washington will stand with NATO allies confronting hostile actions.
