Israel to Simulate Surprise Attack in Eilat, Arava Drill
(MENAFN) The Israeli army announced Sunday it will launch a large-scale military exercise Monday across the Red Sea city of Eilat and the Arava Valley bordering Jordan, simulating a surprise attack scenario.
According to an army statement, the drill will be spearheaded by its 80th Division, with heightened deployment of security forces, aircraft and naval vessels expected in the region beginning Sunday.
Troops will rehearse "a range of scenarios," the army said, including a surprise assault and attempted infiltration into Israeli territory by air, sea and land. Officials did not disclose an end date for the exercise, saying only that operations would continue "over the coming days."
The army said the drill is designed to test the defenses of Israeli communities near the Jordanian border and the Eilat region, sharpen troop readiness, and leverage aerial and naval capabilities to reinforce the area's security. It described the exercise as part of "an ongoing process to strengthen readiness and competence and examine lessons learned from combat and security incidents in recent years."
The announcement follows an Israeli military exercise held just a week earlier in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, which officials said was intended to sharpen preparedness for "surprise and complex attacks."
The drills come amid a rise in warnings over potential infiltration attempts along Israel's eastern border in recent months. In June, Israeli military sources reported thwarting an attempted maritime infiltration into Eilat's hotel district.
An Israeli private broadcaster reported at the time that navy forces had spotted an individual on a jet ski approaching the hotel area from the direction of the Jordanian border. Israeli forces fired warning shots and subsequently opened fire toward the person after they failed to halt, before the individual retreated in the direction from which they came. Jordan did not comment on the Israeli account.
