Kinshasa Wedding Fire Kills 22, Sparks Nationwide Safety Probe
(MENAFN) At least 22 people died and several others were injured after a blaze tore through a wedding venue in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, on Saturday, according to a local official.
The fire broke out during a wedding reception at a building in Kinshasa's Lingwala commune, Lingwala Mayor Norbert Mushinga said.
"After inspecting the place, I can confirm that the provisional death toll stands at 22," Mushinga told reporters in Kinshasa.
"People faced difficulties reaching the emergency exit; everyone was in a state of panic," he said.
Mushinga reported that property inside the building was also destroyed, and that several injured victims had been transported to health facilities across Kinshasa for treatment. He added that authorities have opened an investigation into the fire's cause, with an electrical fault currently suspected.
In response, Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani issued a statement directing all provincial governors to carry out immediate safety inspections of venues used for public events. Shabani further ordered officials to shut down any establishments found to be non-compliant with safety regulations.
