Qatar's PM Heads to Beijing for Talks on China Ties, Regional Crisis
(MENAFN) Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani is set to arrive in Beijing for a two-day visit to China, officials confirmed Sunday.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced in a brief statement that Sheikh Mohammed's trip will run from Sept. 7 to 8.
Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari also confirmed the visit Sunday, saying the premier will hold a series of meetings with senior Chinese officials during his stay.
According to Al-Ansari, who spoke to news agency, the discussions will center on deepening the strategic partnership between Qatar and China, with an emphasis on expanding cooperation across multiple sectors as well as boosting economic and investment ties.
He said the agenda will also cover pressing regional developments and diplomatic initiatives aimed at easing tensions and bolstering security and stability across the region. Both sides are expected to underscore the importance of safeguarding the security and freedom of international navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, he added.
The visit unfolds against the backdrop of the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Qatar, working alongside Pakistan, has played an active mediating role in efforts to bring Washington and Tehran to the negotiating table to end their monthslong war.
