Zelenskyy Meets Witkoff, Kushner in Kyiv as Talks Restart
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Kyiv on Sunday, signaling a fresh push toward diplomacy.
"Negotiations have begun," Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.
A Ukrainian outlet reported that Zelenskyy said Russia blocked the US delegation from flying into the country, despite Ukrainian airports being fully operational and prepared to receive them.
"Unfortunately, the Russians have shown through their strikes that they cannot allow us to use our airports, even though we have prepared everything and our airports are still operating today," he said.
Witkoff and Kushner — the latter US President Donald Trump's son-in-law — arrived at Kyiv's railway station earlier Sunday, marking their first-ever visit to Ukraine since Russia's invasion began.
The Kyiv trip came on the heels of a stop in Moscow, where the American delegation met directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said the discussions ran three hours and 10 minutes, touching on both the war in Ukraine and prospective large-scale Russian-US business ventures. Ushakov called the meeting "substantive, constructive and extremely frank."
The last round of US-mediated peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv took place earlier this year, with three rounds of talks held in January and February. Those talks stalled afterward, with both sides pointing to the US military campaign against Iran — launched in late February — as the reason for the pause.
