Israeli Strikes Level Ghandour Hospital in South Lebanon
(MENAFN) Israeli airstrikes completely destroyed Ghandour Hospital in the southern Lebanese town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa on Sunday, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry.
"The Israeli airstrikes carried out this morning completely destroyed Ghandour Hospital in Nabatieh al-Fawqa," a ministry statement said.
The ministry said strikes on medical facilities are deepening the toll already inflicted on Lebanon's health sector amid the continuing Israeli offensive, calling the hospital's destruction "another violation of protection afforded to medical facilities under international humanitarian law."
According to the ministry, the hospital had ceased operations roughly two months ago as Israeli strikes on Nabatieh and neighboring areas intensified. Officials noted the facility had served a critical function during earlier waves of escalation — delivering healthcare to local residents and, for an extended stretch, functioning as a shelter for displaced people.
The ministry reported that 17 hospitals across Lebanon have sustained damage from Israeli strikes since March 2, with three hospitals in the south rendered completely inoperable.
Ghandour Hospital's destruction came just hours after a wave of Israeli airstrikes swept across southern Lebanon, killing four people and wounding 20 others, per a preliminary count from the ministry. The strikes struck multiple locations within Nabatieh district, including Nabatieh al-Fawqa, the Al-Rahibat neighborhood of Nabatieh city, Arab Salim and Kfar Remman.
The escalation follows a claim by the Israeli army that it intercepted a drone allegedly fired by Hezbollah toward Israeli forces stationed in what Tel Aviv refers to as a "security zone" in southern Lebanon — a development that has fueled a recent surge in Israeli attacks on the area.
The renewed strikes defy a US-brokered framework agreement signed June 26, which lays out a phased Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory contingent on the deployment of the Lebanese army.
Since launching its campaign against Lebanon on March 2, Israel has killed 4,358 people and injured 12,359 others, while displacing more than 1 million, according to Lebanese authorities. Israel maintains its occupation of parts of southern Lebanon, encompassing both territory held for decades and land seized during the 2023-2024 conflict.
