Cholera Kills 23 in Sudan's West Kordofan as Crisis Deepens
(MENAFN) At least 23 people have died and more than 310 cholera cases and suspected infections have been recorded across two areas of West Kordofan in southern Sudan, a local relief group reported Sunday.
The Dar Hamar Emergency Room, a community-based relief organization, issued two separate statements warning of rapidly deteriorating health and humanitarian conditions in Humeir village and Hilla Hussein, both located in Al-Udayyah locality.
The group described Humeir as facing a "serious health situation," with 120 suspected cholera cases admitted to an isolation center and 11 deaths already recorded there. It said the center is critically short of intravenous fluids and life-saving medicines even as suspected cases continue to climb, and appealed urgently to health authorities and humanitarian organizations to deliver medical supplies before conditions worsen further.
In a separate statement, the group said the crisis had escalated in Hilla Hussein, where more than 190 cholera cases and 12 deaths tied to the disease have been documented. Disrupted transportation has effectively cut off the area, the group said, making it extremely difficult to evacuate critically ill patients for treatment elsewhere.
The organization also flagged a worsening food crisis, noting that some residents had been forced to feed their children animal feed to survive. It called on humanitarian groups to immediately deliver both medicine and food assistance to affected residents. The group did not specify the exact timeframe over which the deaths, confirmed cases and suspected infections occurred.
The warning follows an alert issued July 14 by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which cautioned that ongoing fighting combined with disease outbreaks were exacting a severe toll on civilians nationwide. The World Health Organization reported on July 7 that 1,330 confirmed cholera cases and 114 deaths had been recorded amid Sudan's broader outbreak.
Sudan has been gripped by conflict between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023 — a war that has killed tens of thousands and displaced roughly 13 million people, according to UN and international estimates.
