Protests Spread Across Northern Israel Against Netanyahu Government
(MENAFN) Dozens of demonstrations take place across northern Israel on Saturday as protesters voice opposition to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, according to reports.
Demonstrators gather in numerous locations to criticize the government and object to its controversial judicial overhaul, which has remained a major source of political tension.
Protests are reported in several areas, including Nahariya, Rosh Pina, Karmiel, Hadera and Haifa.
Netanyahu’s government introduced its judicial overhaul in early 2023, proposing changes aimed at reducing the Supreme Court’s powers and giving elected officials greater influence over judicial appointments. The plans sparked months of large-scale demonstrations across Israel.
Opposition parties and parts of the Israeli public have additionally demanded the creation of a state commission of inquiry to examine failures surrounding the October 2023 attacks by Hamas. Netanyahu’s government has rejected those calls.
The prime minister is also facing a corruption trial.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Gaza Strip.
Israel’s war in Gaza, which began in October 2023, has killed at least 73,651 Palestinians and wounded another 174,575, according to figures from the Gaza Health Ministry.
