Plateau State Closes Schools Over Diphtheria Outbreak
(MENAFN) Authorities in Nigeria’s north-central Plateau State order all public and private primary and secondary schools to close indefinitely from Sept. 7 after diphtheria cases are detected across four local government areas.
The decision applies to schools that have already resumed classes, with the suspension remaining in place until officials issue further instructions. The measure is introduced as a precaution intended to contain transmission of the infectious disease.
According to the state government, infections are reported in Jos North, Jos South, Bassa and Wase local government areas, leading authorities to halt school activities in an effort to prevent the outbreak from spreading further.
School owners, administrators and teachers are instructed to follow the closure order, while parents and guardians are asked to keep their children at home until schools are permitted to reopen.
The shutdown comes as the diphtheria situation in Plateau State continues to deteriorate. Earlier this week, health authorities report that 23 people have died and 143 suspected infections have been identified. Nine patients are currently undergoing treatment at Jos University Teaching Hospital and Plateau Specialist Hospital.
Officials say the response is being complicated by limited supplies of diphtheria antitoxin, as well as delays in patients seeking medical attention after developing symptoms.
