Iran's IRGC Warns US Blockade Could Backfire, Cost Washington More

(MENAFN) Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Sunday that the US economic and maritime blockade against Tehran could ultimately inflict far greater costs on Washington than on Iran itself.

"If the US wants to inflict one dollar of economic damage on Iran, it may face several dollars in costs and losses itself," IRGC spokesman Brig. Gen. Hossein Mohibi told an Iranian news agency.

He insisted that Iran would not bow to sanctions or outside pressure.

Mohibi claimed that US President Donald Trump had gambled on Washington's military might — its naval fleet and aircraft carriers among them — to force Tehran into retreat. Recent events, he argued, have exposed that calculation as flawed.

He further contended that the US, already burdened by heavy debt and locked in economic competition with China and other nations, would struggle to come out ahead in what he characterized as an economic war against Iran.

Mohibi also claimed that regional developments have strained US strategic reserves and disrupted access to certain raw materials, pointing specifically to interruptions in regional aluminum production and exports.

These developments, he said, demonstrate that economic pressure and blockades do not guarantee victory — and can instead saddle the enforcing country with steep costs of its own.

The conflict traces back to February, when the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran, triggering Iranian retaliatory attacks against US and Israeli targets and stoking tensions over maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Alongside its military campaign, Washington has ramped up economic pressure on Tehran, rolling out sanctions targeting Iran's oil, shipping, aviation, technology and financial sectors.

Iranian officials have repeatedly characterized these sanctions and maritime trade restrictions as nothing short of an economic war and blockade.
