Putin, Witkoff, Kushner Open Moscow Talks on Ukraine War
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin sat down with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner in Moscow on Saturday for talks aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.
A Russian state news agency, citing the Kremlin, reported that presidential aide Yury Ushakov and presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev also joined the negotiations.
Opening the talks, Putin described the situation facing negotiators as "certainly complex," while acknowledging that President Donald Trump continues pushing for a resolution to the conflict despite having entered a "difficult situation."
"Today, we will discuss all its components, all aspects, and we, for our part, are ready to inform you of our view of the situation," Putin said in comments broadcast by Russian state media.
He added: "As you informed us, I know that after Moscow, you are planning to travel to (Ukraine's capital) Kyiv. In any case, no matter what happens there, contacts of this kind are certainly always beneficial."
Witkoff, in turn, thanked the Russian leader for agreeing to a three-day ceasefire covering the weekend, during which he and Kushner plan to visit both Moscow and Kyiv.
He also passed along thanks from the family of former US Marine Robert Gilman, expressing gratitude to Putin for facilitating Gilman's release. Gilman had been imprisoned in Russia since 2022 before Moscow freed him last month.
Witkoff and Kushner touched down at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport earlier Saturday, where Dmitriev was on hand to greet them. The pair are slated to travel on to Kyiv on Sunday — their first stop in the Ukrainian capital following the Moscow leg of their trip.
Trump said Friday that his envoys were heading to Moscow not merely to float new concepts, but to deliver a concrete proposal for ending a war that has now dragged on for more than four years.
"They're bringing with them a proposal to end the war," Trump said of the two negotiators, though he declined to elaborate on its specific contents.
Saturday's meeting marks the first Moscow visit by Witkoff and Kushner since late January, when the pair last met with Putin at the Kremlin.
