Zelenskyy Offers Ceasefire on Cities Tied to US Peace Talks
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Saturday that Kyiv is prepared to pause airstrikes on cities linked to Washington-brokered negotiations aimed at ending the war with Russia.
Writing on X, the American social media platform, Zelenskyy said he had held talks with US envoys who arrived in Moscow earlier that day and had already begun discussions on Russian soil.
“From the moment of this conversation, we are ready to observe a ceasefire in airstrikes against the cities involved in the negotiation process.
“From now through the end of Saturday, as well as on Sunday and Monday, Ukraine is ready to refrain from strikes on Moscow, and we expect the Russians to do the same regarding Kyiv,” Zelenskyy added.
The announcement followed a statement from the Kremlin confirming that Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered a three-day suspension of strikes on Kyiv, set to take effect at midnight local time (2100 GMT).
The diplomatic push intensified earlier Saturday when US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner landed in Moscow, opening a fresh round of talks meant to bring the four-year war closer to resolution. The two negotiators are scheduled to travel on to Kyiv on Sunday — their first visit to the Ukrainian capital since the diplomatic effort began.
President Donald Trump signaled Friday that the mission carried more than talking points. Kushner and Witkoff, he said, were not heading to Moscow to float fresh concepts but to deliver a concrete framework for ending the fighting.
“They’re bringing with them a proposal to end the war,” Trump said.
