Child Deaths from Measles Symptoms Increase in Bangladesh
(MENAFN) Bangladesh reports four additional child deaths associated with measles and measles-like symptoms over the past 24 hours, bringing the number of fatalities linked to the outbreak to 991 since mid-March, according to health authorities.
Of the total deaths, 100 are officially confirmed as measles-related after another child dies from the infection during the latest reporting period. The Dhaka division accounts for 464 of the reported fatalities.
Health authorities also record 843 additional cases involving measles-like symptoms and 74 newly confirmed infections. This brings the overall number of symptomatic cases to 163,105, while confirmed measles infections reach 19,641.
Since the outbreak began in mid-March, 143,214 infected children have been hospitalized across Bangladesh. Of those patients, 137,921 recover and are discharged, according to official figures.
The densely populated South Asian nation, home to roughly 175 million people, continues to face difficulties controlling the outbreak amid low vaccination coverage, according to the World Health Organization.
